Literacy for Dagomba Women

The women of this Dagomba community outside of Tamale have shown extraordinary perseverance in their desire to learn how to read. Their journey began during evening Bible studies, where only 2 out of 20 women could read and write. Yet despite long days of caring for their families, they still gathered—often at 8pm—to hear God’s Word. As one woman expressed, she longed to “read the Bible for herself instead of always hearing it from others.”

Recognizing their desire to learn, a one-year literacy program was created in 2024. With the help of a trained local teacher—supported through the Vulnerable Women's Project—these women received books, pencils, and readers to begin their studies. The teacher’s dedication was evident; he taught with joy and celebrated every new word they heard.

Life in the village made learning difficult. Farming season from June to November demanded long hours. Some women became ill, and heavy rains often kept them from attending lessons. As noted in the document, “The teacher told us the women did not like writing, but they stuck with it.” Even as attendance fluctuated, a faithful few continued to show up, determined to learn.

By 2025, the women felt they needed more time. They asked for another year—and they promised to work hard. Six women persevered through every obstacle and completed the program. Their dedication paid off: they are now able to read their new Bibles with confidence.

A joyful celebration marked the end of their literacy journey. The women received their own Bibles, shared snacks and drinks, and were congratulated by church elders. Their smiles reflected pride and accomplishment. They were told that now, as readers, they would be called upon to read Scripture during Bible study and in church—an honor they accepted gladly.

These women have proven their resilience and determination. Their story is a testament to the power of perseverance, community support, and faith. May they continue to grow in knowledge and confidence as they read and learn.

Pray for these women to keep learning.
